Women are too scared to go to post boxes alone in Ext 22, Secunda

Caretaker is disappointed in police

SECUNDA – Women are too scared to empty their post boxes at the Post Office building in Extension 22, as hobos daily sit there and drink.

The caretaker of the centre said he contacted the police, but they cannot help and he does not know what else to do.

“We have asked them to go, but they refuse,” said the caretaker.

“One weekend I locked the gates so that they could not get in and they simply broke the lock and still got inside.”

According to the caretaker, the vagrants sit in the walkway where residents are supposed to walk when they want to empty their post boxes. They also leave their empty beer bottles and other rubbish inside this building and sleep there at night.

“Every time I clean it and the next weekend they just leave a mess again.”

Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman of Secunda Police, said the police will take it up with the municipality. She will also speak to the visible policing unit to patrol the area and curb the drinking in public nuisance.

The Ridge Times contacted the communications department of Govan Mbeki Municipality to find out if the municipality can take hands with the police and enforce by-laws, but no one responded at the time of going to print.
