Secunda Police’s sport stars receive accolades

Col Willie Nel, the club’s outgoing chairman, presented the recipients with the accolades. He has been the chairman since 1997.

SECUNDA – Secunda Police’s Sport Club yielded several members who excelled on a national level this year.

The club’s performers were recognised with certificates and floating trophies at their year-end function held in the Graceland Arena on Saturday night, 2 November.

Sgt Richard Xaba was awarded the trophy for Soccer coach of the year.

Const Poppy Mtsweni received the trophy for Soccer Sportwoman of the Year.

W/O Liesl Horak was chosen as the manager of the national police women’s cricket team and she was awarded to the effect.

The trophy winners at the Secunda Police Sport Club’s annual awards are (in front) Sgt Agent Moagi, Ms Carmen Franken, Const Poppy Mtsweni, W/O Liesl Horak and Sgt Richard Xaba. At the back are Const Denton Sibanyoni, Col Willie Nel and Capt Johan Smit.

Ms Carmen Franken was honoured as the police cricket’s national and forces treasurer.

Const Agent Moagi was awared as the Best Marathon Performer. His excellent time in the Comrades Marathon clinched the deal.

Const Denton Sibanyoni was acknowledged as the best improvement in marathons.

Capt Johan Smit recently became the national police angling champion in the disabled category.

Certificates of recognition in various sport codes were also handed out.

The members recognised in angling, are Smit, André Henn and Frik Viviers. The marathon runners are Denton Sibanyoni, Moagi, Simon Sibisi and Esther Nhlapo.

Joy Smit and Petro Bester at the awards evening. They were recognised for volleyball.

The cops’ soccer stars are Xaba, SB Madonsela, Poppy Mtsweni and SW Nkabinde.

Ms Franken and W/O Horak were acknowledged in cricket, Mjorane Tshabalala for golf and Petro Bester and Joy Smit for volleyball.

Jabu Mnisi, Jackie Mthombeni and Oosie Oosthuizen were applauded for their work with Sport Against Crime.

Lieut-Col Kawa Karelse is the newly elected chairman as well as the representative for tennis.

W/O André Henn, Capt Johan Smit and Capt Frik Viviers were honoured for their performances in angling.

Sgt Xaba was elected deputy chairman, Ms Franken the secretary and Col Tienie Pretorius and Const Moagi as the additional members. Moagi is also the representative for athletics, fitness and marathons.

The sporting codes representatives are Capt Smit for angling, W/O , Louwrens van Schaik for Combat Rifle, W/O Horak for cricket, Capt Chris Venter for golf, Const Mabaso vir cycling, Const Mtsweni for netball and ,Const Mthimunye for soccer.

The club’s marathon Stars are Denton Sibanyoni, Simon Sibisi, Agent Moagi and Esther Nhlapo.
