Top marksman from Secunda excel at Regiment Botha competition

SECUNDA – W/O Louwrens van Schaik from Secunda netted the several first prizes at the recent Regiment Botha shooting competition held on Dusty Farm at Barberton.

The shooters took part in various categories.

In the .303 category, the marksmen had to shoot with an authentic .303 rifle with open iron sights.

The open category gave shooters the chance to use any rifle of any calibre and extensions up to a .50 BGM calibre.

In the handgun category, shooters were allowed any handgun of any calibre.

The R4 or LM 4 category made provision for shooters to use any R or LM series rifle.

The marksmen could also use any .22 rifle in the .22 rifle category, and in the clay pigeon category they were allowed to use any shotgun of any calibre.

According to Van Schaik, the rifle range matches were shot on 100m and 300m in the standing, kneeling, squatting sitting and prone positions.

The shooters were not allowed to use any rests except their bodies.

The pistol ranges were shot in a standing position with both hands, right hand only, left hand only, and a rapid fire match.

The .22 rifle range was shot in the standing, kneeling and siting positions.

Clay pigeons were shot from five different boxes and clays were fired from four different angles.

Van Schaik won the open category with a .308 rifle. He won the handgun category with a .357 Magnum and he won the R4 category with a LM4 rifle.

He came third in the .303 category with a riffle he borrowed from a fellow shooter.

“I am very proud of my wife’s achievement. She did so well despite her injured elbow,” said Van Schaik.

According to this Protea marksman, joining your local shooting clubs and shooting association helps a lot as it is there during which you gain experience, skills, and knowledge about firearms and equipment, safe handling of guns and much more.
