Alleged abortionists apply for Legal Aid assistance at Secunda Regional Court

The four accused appeared for the first time in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 July on charges of kidnapping, murder and attempted murder

SECUNDA – Four people who were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a pregnant woman and performing an abortion on her in July last year, appeared in the Secunda Regional Court for the first time on 17 January.

Ms Lydia Mojemba (34), and Messrs Seyikabi Wilson (46), Jingo Wassua (35) and Njombozi Katiti (43) indicated that they wanted legal aid representation.

They are being accused that they snatched Ms Mojemba’s 20-year-old niece from her home in Sunset Park on 13 July and took her to Ogies where Ms Mojemba allegedly operates as an abortionist and traditional healer.

The niece, who was eight months pregnant, was allegedly locked in a room in Ogies where abortion tablets were forced down her throat and also vaginally inserted until her baby was still-born.

The baby was wrapped in plastic and allegedly dumped next to the train tracks at a bridge in Ogies. When the police later canvassed the area the baby’s body could not be found.

The young woman managed to escape from the room after several days and fled back to Secunda where she and her boyfriend alerted the police.

The four accused appeared for the first time in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 July on charges of kidnapping, murder and attempted murder. They were remanded in custody.

The case will proceed in the Regional Court on 27 February.
