Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, spokesman of Evander Police, said today that 113 illegal miners known as zama zamas were arrested in the operation held yesterday, 8 June.
“The operation took place in Evander town and surrounding areas, ” he explained.
Members of the Crime Prevention Unit in the cluster and K9 unit formed part of the operation.
“They searched for dangerous weapons, drugs and illegal immigrants and closed down illegal taverns.”
Evander Vispol Head Captain Michack Mhlanga, said the police will not rest until criminal activities have stopped in Evander.
He said Evander needs to be a safe place rather than a no-go area because of crime.
“The people who were arrested during the operation will appear in the Evander Magistrate Court on Monday.”
