Staff at Bethal licensing office refuse to help Secunda residents

Residents are fed up with service delivery issues at Secunda and Bethal licensing offices

Personnel at the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Bethal licensing office allegedly refused to help a man on Tuesday, 13 March because he was from Secunda.

He went to the licensing office on Friday and waited in the queue for four hours, only to be told they were offline.

When he returned Tuesday morning, a staff member unplugged his computer and said the man should go for his license in Secunda and not in Bethal.

According to the man’s wife, all the staff members left the office later and refused to help the people.
She contacted the municipality to talk to a manager, but gave up after she was transferred to four different people who were not able to help her.

The Ridge Times asked the municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, as well as the communications department for comment on 13 March and asked him what people should do if they cannot go to Bethal or Secunda for their licenses and also what will happen if traffic officers stop them on the road.

Mr Mhlanga said the questions will be forwarded to the Provincial Department of Community Safety and Community Liaison as the function is no longer delegated to the municipality.
