Storm cause major damage to buildings and some houses in Secunda

Roofs of Eish!! Restaurant, Westpack and the Sanlam Building, to name a few, were blown off or were damaged and Westpack was flooded.

The storm that hit Secunda on Saturday evening, 21 October caused major damage to buildings and some houses.

Roofs of Eish!! Restaurant, Westpack and the Sanlam Building, to name a few, were blown off or were damaged and Westpack was flooded.

Glass doors at United Motors collapsed and fell onto desks inside the offices.

Trees fell over in streets and some into yards.

Trampolines were blown away and advertisement boards in the CBD collapsed under the strong wind.

A few traffic lights and street lights were also damaged in the storm.

A liquor store in the CBD’s doors were also damaged and thieves allegedly stole liquor.

Houses in eMbalenhle were also damaged and about 20 houses were damaged in the Gayles complex in Evander.

Mr Gert Botha, who has a weather station at his house and is a member of the Secunda Radio Club, said he could not tell the exact wind speed as the storm only went through a part of Secunda.

However, the wind speed he measured at his house in Nelson Mandela Drive, was 45km per hour and he measured 30mm of rain.

The direction of the wind was north-north-east.

Mr Botha said he would not classify the storm as a tornado, but a heavy thunder storm.
