The meeting of the Polokwane municipal council was adjourned this morning (Friday) after Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors made it impossible for Speaker Mariri Ralefatane to direct the proceedings.
This happened in the presence of Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Andries Nel, who attended the meeting to announce the municipality’s selection as one of the only two municipalities in the country that will take part in Cogta’s capacity building project.
The EFF attempted to table a motion in which the Hawks were congratulated on the arrest of African National Congress councillor Tebogo Mojapelo on a charge of corruption last Tuesday afternoon. Democratic Alliance Caucus Leader Frank Haas objected to the tabling of the motion on the basis that it had not been submitted in writing before the meeting and did not appear on the agenda.
EFF members raised continuous points of order and ignored Ralefatane’s requests to calm down.
The meeting resumed an hour later after a discussion between Ralefatane and the Chief Whips and continued without the tabling of the motion.
