‘Cop fleet is sufficient’

A shortage of vehicles which leads to the unavailability of police on the streets and contributes to the crime rate in the area, were this week refuted.

Claims by a source within the Polokwane police who said a shortage of vehicles leads to the unavailability of police on the streets and contributes to the crime rate in the area, were this week refuted by Polokwane Police Station Commander, Brig Gift Makhubele.
According to the source, “officials who want to serve and protect are unable to do so since there are not enough vans”.
The person claimed that vehicles that are available are not maintained regularly and often need to be removed from the line of duty. But, said Makhubele, the current fleet was supplemented recently on orders by the Provincial Commissioner, Nneke Ledwaba.
“If truth be told, you can never have enough resources when fighting crime, but the station is able to manage the emergency calls and also patrol the area with the vehicles in our fleet,” Makhubele said.
He added that assistance from the taxi industry, businessforums, Community Policing Forums (CPF) and the community also assist in making the work of the police easier.
