Thabang Mothapo is no stranger to the music industry

His new album, Thank You Lord, aims to bring healing and shows gratitude to God.

POLOKWANE – Thabang Mothapo says gospel music resonates with him because if it wasn’t for his belief in God, he would have quit the music business a long time ago. No stranger to the entertainment industry, Thabang is a professional drummer, singer, vocal director and songwriter who has worked with industry giants such as Simphiwe Dana, Kabomo, Bucie, William Sejake, Xolani Jwaga and others.

He told BONUS that his big break came when he became Jub-Jub’s drummer after being introduced to him by Sabelo Mtshali. Thabang added that his shift to becoming a full-time singer in 2015 was an easy one as music has always been his focus.

“It has been an interesting and difficult journey, with many challenges. It has definitely been a building process, as you learn every day,” he said. His new album, Thank You Lord, aims to bring healing and shows gratitude to God. “This album was a personal one and after many challenges, God proved to me that He never lets me down. There have been many challenges where I thought it was over, but God came through for me, and I’m very grateful for that,” Thabang said.

Although reluctant to categorise his latest offering, Thabang explains that the album has a smooth sound and his favourite tracks from the album include Sikwethembile, Unami and I Really Trust You.

Thabang’s first album was released in 2015, titled Ngek’Akushiye, followed by Ngidinga Wena in 2017. He also gives vocal lessons to up-and-coming artists to improve their vocal skills.
