Make-up hygiene: When to throw away your makeup brushes, mascaras, eyeliners

When is it the right time to replace your makeup brushes, mascaras, eyeliners? Owner of Trendy Beauty Salon, Minkie Molepo shares the hygiene tips she uses as a makeup artist.

POLOKWANE – “You need to change your makeup kit every once in a while, even the well-maintained cosmetic brushes that you clean regularly should be replaced at least every three months,” Minkie said.

She added that one should change makeup sponges should they develop an unusual smell and change their brushes if they start to loose bristles due to use.

“If you use the same tube of mascara on a regular basis for a lengthy time, it can lead to an eye infection. To avoid getting eye-infections due to using old mascara, replace the tube after a minimum of two to three months, whether the tube is finished or not,” she said. She added that this only applies if you use your mascara on a regular basis.

When it comes to eyeliners try replacing it at least every three months, she says.

“Liners are often applied directly onto the eye (and sometimes to ‘shape’ eyebrows), via its in-built applicator, therefore these also need to be monitored closely to avoid eye infections. Users should rather opt for a liquid eyeliner as they have a much shorter lifespan than their pencil counterparts. A liquid liner lasts only around three months, so it is safer to buy the liquid eye-liner rather than the pencil one which can last up to two years,” Minkie advised.

She further explained that anything that comes into constant contact with your face should be washed and replaced regularly. “When using a sponge continuously one can be at risk of transferring bacteria and will possibly land up with an infection. Something as absorbent as a sponge, which not only soaks up water, but dirt, bacteria, oil and dead skin, should be replaced at least every three months,” she concluded.
