Adapt and evolve to remain relevant in the ever changing music industry

House vocalist Thabang Sean Rakoma, offers tips on how musicians can stay relevant in the music industry

LIMPOPO – Thabang Sean Rakoma says he has had to adapt to stay relevant in the music industry.

The 29-year-old from Phalaborwa defines himself as a house vocalist and says at first beat his music lifts the mood. “House music speaks to people from all walks of live, and you can ‘jam’ to it even when you are busy with other things.”

Thabang says he prefers to sing in vernacular, although he does have a few songs ion English. “Mostly if I am not using vernacular, then the song I am working on is a feature from another artist.” He says he has been in the music industry since 2013, and is signed under 5th Pulse music. Thabang says in the years he has been in the industry he has had to adapt to the industry to stay relevant and shares some of his tips with up-and-coming artists:

1. Do not imitate other music. Be original.

2. Do everything from scratch. He says otherwise you might face legal implications after borrowing a beat from someone else.

3. Keep it relative to your life.

4. Express yourself through your songs.

5. Use your own experiences to fuel your inspiration.

6. Keep on pushing, even if it does not work out.

7. Stay consistent in your hustle.

8. Satisfy yourself before releasing your music to the public.

9. Interact with your listeners,

10. Most importantly, have fun making music.

Thabang has just recently released a single under 5th Pulse ‘Makelwane’. A song he says will encourage people to mind their own business, more especially neighbors as the translation of the title.
