Schools, businesses and institutions in the city celebrated Casual Day on Friday by sporting stickers, shirts, caps and hats while being allowed to dress casually within their working environments.
Casual Day is the flagship fundraising and awareness-raising project of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) and the organisation celebrated its 25th anniversary under the theme ‘Time to Shine with Persons with Disabilities’ which encourages South Africans to be shining examples and leading lights for persons with disabilities.
The NCPD said in a media release that in the 24 years since its inception Casual Day has raised R334 500 000. This has grown from R413 000 in 1995 to a record-breaking
R31 million last year. “We urge all South Africans to show their support for persons with disabilities by buying a Casual Day sticker and dressing according to the 2019 Casual Day theme,” said Therina Wentzel-du Toit, national director of the NCPD and explained that the NCPD has more than 80 years’ experience in human rights advocacy and is actively engaged in diverse forms of advocacy, including facilitating access to education, economic empowerment and lobbying for inclusive public transport for persons with disabilities.
