Patrick Rakgabale’s music preserves the Pedi culture

LIMPOPO – Pedi traditional singer, Patrick Rakgabale’s music is not only about entertainment but also serves as a way to preserve the Pedi culture.

The 41-year-old veteran from Ga-Sekgopo, better know as Tau Sebata, recently released his music video Kgoshi Mampuru II which features Shardrack Moruthanyane.

According to Rakgabale, his music video honours the late Kgoshi Mampuru II who was killed by the colonial power during the Apartheid- era.

Rakgabale told CV that his music serves as a tool to protect and promote the Pedi heritage and history.

“In the video Kgoshi Mampuru II is remembered for his blood stance against colonial domination. I saw it as a crucial tool to honour our stalwart through our cultural music,” he explained.

Rakgabale said the compiling of this music video was a collective work which needed a lot of travelling.

“We had to shoot the video in both the Sekhukhune and Capricorn districts. Traditional music runs in my veins and I love the fact that our music lasts. This genre plays a crucial role in our lives, because it sometimes takes us closer to our ancestors,” he explained.

He said the inspiration he got from the late Peta Teanet and Manoko Semenya forced him to follow in their footsteps.

“Being in the industry for 24 years, has taught me a lot about our heritage and culture,” he said.

Rakgabale added that he records his music not only to earn an income but also for the love of his culture and heritage.

“I love my culture and the recognition I get from the public always motivates me. With my previous album, Thabeng tsa Mmanopi, I hope to scoop several awards,” he said.

Rakgabale is currently working on his third album, which promises to take the airwaves by storm.

“I am also currently organising a first Sepedi music festival, which will take place in November,” said Rakgabale.
