Letaba Rest Camp- An Elephant and Bird Watching Paradise

For birders, Letaba offers some of the best bird watching opportunities in the Kruger, particularly of owls.

Letaba Rest Camp is located midway between the southern and northern boundaries of the Kruger National Park and boasts gorgeous views of the Letaba River which is the main source of water for an abundance of wildlife, particularly elephants and a number of bird species. Elephants thrive in the area surrounding Letaba because of the water supply and mopane shrubland which is a big element of their diet. Situated close to two other dams, the wildlife viewing is fantastic, with guests often seeing lion, cheetah, waterbuck and buffalo.

For birders, Letaba offers some of the best bird watching opportunities in the Kruger, particularly of owls. Pearl-spotted and African Barred Owlet and African Scops-Owl are often heard at night, whilst Verreaux’s Eagle Owl are regularly seen along the river itself. The riverbed usually hosts a wide range of herons, storks and waders. Mourning Dove are generally spotted in the central and northern parts of the park, whilst the Red-headed Weavers are generally seen nesting near the petrol station and in front of the restaurant. The Masorini Ruins which is close to the Phalaborwa Gate, is a great place to catch a glimpse of Yellow-throated Petronia, Mocking Cliff-Chat and Red-headed Weaver.

The Matambeni Bird Hide nestles on the northern bank of the Engelhard Dam and is a great place to view water birds. The southern banks of the dam see Collared Pratincoles annually and can sometimes be seen from the camp.

The aloes and impala lilies around the camp attracts a variety of birds, including the White Bellied and Marico Sunbird, Crested Barbet, Blackheaded Oriole and Black Eyed Bulbul

The camp itself caters to solo explorers, couples and families alike; with a wide range of accommodation options to choose from: guesthouses, cottages, bungalows, huts, safari tents, and campsites. The camp has some great facilities, including a swimming pool, restaurant, shop and cafeteria.

Although guests to Letaba are welcome to self-drive the park, it is always a good idea to book a few guided activities as the guides are skilled and know exactly where to look out for specific animal and bird species. The guided activities offered at the camp include morning, sunset and night drives; along with guided 4×4 trails, bush walks and a riverside camp walk. One can also visit the Letaba Elephant Hill or overnight in a hide.
