Afro-Pop opened Rejoinder’s eyes to a world of possibilities

Young artists tend to choose hip-hop and house music, but this was not the case for Answer 'Rejoinder' Chauke who opted for Afro-pop instead.

POLOKWANE – The 23-year-old developed a love for music when he was five years old and recorded his first song at the age of 13.

In 2009 he formed a group called Spy Dreams, but unfortunately the group split in 2012. He formed another group called MBK Boys and brought out his first album: Summer Time.

In 2017 he released an album called Monica, which aired on Munghana Lonene FM, Phalaphala FM and other local radio stations. Rejoinder was nominated in 2018 for the best Xitsonga R&B song of the year at the Mughana Lonene FM Awards (XMA15).

Apart from music, Rejoinder currently studies towards a civil engineering degree at Tshwane University of Technology.

He recently dropped a single with Mitchel Richards entitled: I won’t give up. “When I started doing music, I was influenced by 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. I was impressed with their lifestyle and the music touched me, I wished to be like them at some point. I started listening to African music, like Afro-pop and was impressed with Nigerian artists and the African sound they were making. My first Afro single was a success. It opened doors and my eyes to what kind of music I’m supposed to do. There are certain artists I wish to work with, like Wizkid, Davido, Tekno, and Mr Eazy,” says Chauke.

He adds that his family is always there for him, but when he started his music career they were skeptical initially as they thought he was going to leave school to puruse music. “When they realised how passionate I was about music, they started to support me. I used to rap as well, but fell in love with Afro-pop. I recorded my first Afro-pop song called My Mello and my fans loved it. I realised Afro-pop is what I’m good at and I still love it,” he says.
