The Cansa Polokwane Relay for Life that was scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed to a date to be announced, probably in October. A cancer community market will, however, be hosted at the Cansa Polokwane Care Centre (formerly the Theunis Fichardt Hospitium) off Dorp Street to promote cancer survivors and afford more teams an opportunity to register for the later event.
Christopher Combrink, Cansa Polokwane Relay for Life Coordinator confirmed that, although the venue at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium was booked more than a year ago, Cansa was informed last Friday that the venue had been double-booked and that the facilities will be required for the athletics trials of Limpopo schools. “We have searched for an alternative suitable venue, but with no success,” Combrink said.
Combrink said that 28 teams have already registered and that they will now have more time to prepare for the new event and to come up with really exciting ideas. “New teams will also have yet another opportunity to register on Saturday,” he added.
According to Sally Hansen, Chairperson of the Board of Cansa Polokwane Care Centre, cancer survivors will be hosted as special guests from 08:00 until 15:00 on Saturday and will be allowed to join the public in mini relays around the grounds of the centre. Entertainment will be provided for children and stalls with A Grade meat, boerewors rolls, plants, fruit and vegetables, prego rolls and pancakes will be available to make a visit to the centre worth your while.
Entry is free and no payment is required to participate in the mini relays.
Hansen also appealed to residents to be a sign of hope and to wear purple on Friday. Stickers are available at the Cansa Polokwane Care Centre at R10 each. Call Carla on 015 295 5292 or 015 295 4006 to get your stickers and make your contribution towards the activities of the centre.
