Noorderland High School’s 2018 Grade 11 Dux learner, Tshegofatso Kubayi is determined to achieve great things in the future but her immediate resolve is to obtain seven distinctions at the end of this academic year which would make it possible for her to pursue a career in the engineering industry. Although she has not yet decided on which module she would like to specialise in, she is convinced that engineering is a suitable sector for her.
She was named the 2018 Grade 11 top learner during the school’s academic prize giving ceremony last Thursday. Tshegofatso ascended the stage several times to receive subject prizes and a trophy for being the top learner. The subject prizes were for English First Additional Language (FAL) with a score of 94%, Physical Sciences 93%, Life Sciences 93% and Accounting 96%. Her prizes include a Dux trophy, certificates and R950 cash.

Dux learner Tshegofatso Kubayi is congratulated by her proud parents, Charles and Choene.

She dedicated the winnings to her educators, family and everyone who motivates her. “I was not expecting so many rewards in one day. They came as a surprise and they would motivate me to work even harder to up my standard. I am working towards seven distinctions at the end of the year but I have left a small room for disappointment,” Tshegofatso stated.
She doesn’t have a secret for her success but revealed that time management, discipline and extra lessons at the school help her to manage all her work. Tshegofatso is not only an academic achiever but also likes soccer. She explained that she wanted to join a football club this year but her work load doesn’t allow her, adding that most people are surprised by the love and passion she has for the sport as she pointed out Manchester United Football Club as her favourite team.
She encouraged the Class of 2019 to be focused, keep an eye on the prize and be self-motivated to achieve their goals. She went on to highlight that one should surround oneself with people who inspire you to strive for excellence.
Her proud mother, Choene described her as a determined and hard working person who puts her schoolwork first, adding that they foresee a bright future ahead. She said Tshegofatso’s achievements continue to make the family proud and hoped that she would continue at the same pace even at the institution of higher learning next year. She concluded by pledging her support as she indicated the family would make it a point that Tshegofatso has the relevant tools and emotional support to excel in her studies.
