Scores of aspiring musicians from across the province made their way to Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on Saturday to audition for the 15th season of Idols SA.
In their quest to join history-makers like Paxton, Noma, Karabo and Khaya Mthethwa, all previous winners of the competition, the hopefuls sang their hearts out to impress in the past judging panel.
Among the popular choices were Sam Smith’s 2013 hit, Latch and Ariana Grande’s God is a woman.
Aspiring contestant Lethabo Serokolo from Jane Furse, Sekhukhune thanked the producers of Idols for bringing the auditions to the province. “It was a good platform for the myriads of singers in the province to showcase their talents. We don’t usually have a platform like this and we made good use of the opportunity,” he said and added that his wish for the season was that the province should yield the winner.
“Since the inception of the competition no musician from the province has ever won it. Matema Moremi was a finalist in 2015 and since then none from the province has ever made to the top 3 or top 6 of the competition. I would love to see myself and other musicians from the province advancing in the competition and eventually winning it.”
Only South African citizens aged between 16 and 30 years are eligible to enter the competition. Persons who auditioned in previous seasons are allowed to re-enter, but not anyone from a previous Top 10.
The names of the hopefuls who made to the next round of the competition from the province will be announced in due course.
The full prize package is still to be confirmed, but the winner will win a recording contract amongst other big prizes.
Raksha Gunpath, Public Relations and Promotions Manager at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World said they were pleased to be the host venue of this year’s Idols pop-up auditions and they would like to congratulate all of the local winners who went through to the next stage. “We wish them all of the best going forward.”
