Among the demands listed in the Westenburg Community Development Forum’s (WCDF) memorandum that was handed over during their meetings, was the repairs of the public swimming pools in Westenburg and Nirvana.

During the three meetings held in July and August at the Westenburg Community Hall with Polokwane Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng, she promised to send a delegation with members of the WCDF to do an assessment of the swimming pools, parks and sport grounds.

A task team led by the mayor’s office and officials from relevant departments within the municipality met with WCDF members in September and visited the parks, swimming pools and sports grounds, and the community was told there was no budget for the parks and stadium, but only a budget for the swimming pools.

In September, the mayor mentioned that the service provider was on site doing repairs on the Westenburg and Nirvana swimming pools. She explained that the pools have been experiencing closures due to old filtration systems which resulted in the continuous collapse of the system, leading to the pools closing during the swimming season.

Also in September, the municipality refurbished the two swimming pools by installing new filtration systems.

As the service provider was believed to be on site, Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo mentioned that both swimming pools were expected to be completed by end of October, and there has still been no progress.

By the time of print, Polokwane Municipality has not yet responded.
