POLOKWANE – It is wedding season and more couples are going for coordinated outfits.

Maribe Mamabolo, the owner of Peretla Clothing Designs explained that couples and matching outfits are a definite yes for weddings as it creates a uniform look and creates a spark of love.

Children can also be incorporated into the look and it makes for beautiful family photos,” he said. Mamabolo shared that he usually works first with the woman and then move on to the man when making couple’s outfits.

“I usually start with the woman’s dress, find out what she wants and then incorporate the man’s outfit from the general idea of the woman. You can’t be a man outshining your woman, it can’t work,” he said.

He provided a few things to keep in mind as you prepare to be a guest at someone’s wedding:

1. Check, understand and stick to the theme. Make sure that you dress appropriately for the theme.

“What works for a garden wedding doesn’t necessarily work for an indoor wedding. Make sure that you take those things into consideration,” he said.

2. For women, this season, the in trend for dresses is drop shoulders and long pencil skirts or dresses.

“Be cautious though because this shape doesn’t work for every body type so you need to check what works for you. Slim fit for men is always a must.

“Don’t go and buy a suit if it doesn’t proportionally fit your body shape, get it altered so that it fits like a glove, baggy suits need to go,” he said.

3. Soft colours like dusty pink and mint are in this season, so don’t go for the overly bright colours and don’t over accessorise.

“You don’t want to look like a fully decorated Christmas tree with all the decorations,” he said.

4. Mamabolo advises, that in an attempt to match, couples need to avoid going for the exact same outfit.

“If the lady is wearing a pink dress, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the man needs to wear a pink shirt. He can just add a touch of pink to his look with a pocket square,” he said.

5. Don’t go too extravagant because you are not competing with the couple getting married.

“People need to remember that it is not their day. Don’t try to outshine the couple at their wedding, it’s wrong,” he added. With that said though, it doesn’t mean that effort should not be put into the outfit selection.

6. Something else that needs to be taken into consideration is skin tones, especially with coordinated outfits for couples with opposite skin stones.

“I would suggest that if one partner has a darker complexion, go for colours that will complement both skin tones like royal/navy/cobalt blues,” he said.

The idea is not to make the contrast wider, making one partner look darker and the other partner even paler.
