Tips on how to get those nails summer-ready

Dry cuticles are very common, especially with the change of seasons.

POLOKWANE – This is the view of Tendai Marimbire, a self employed nail technician from the city.

She explained that one of the signs of cuticles that are in dire need of attention, are the ones that are peeling off and that look extremely dry.

She gave some tips on how to get the cuticles in good shape again.

Your nails will report to you when they are taking strain. If your cuticles are showing signs of ill-health, remove any nail polish from the nails before you can begin to treat them, as nail polish can act as a protective layer and could cut off any regeneration of the cuticles.

“The number one thing is to keep your hands moisturised. For those who can afford it, olive oil works wonders on the nails and cuticles and overall health of the skin,” she said. Another alternative is using petroleum jelly to moisturise the hands. She also advised that wearing gloves when washing dishes can help keep the hands hydrated.

Another major thing that drys out the nails is warm water.

“People don’t realise this but warm water makes the hands to try out. Imagine that you wash dishes with warm water, and you also add detergent into the water that you use. It will have a negative impact on your skin and nails,” she said.

After working with warm water, make sure that you properly dry your nails and moisturise before them before they become too dry.

Next time you see somebody wearing gloves when they wash dishes, it is easier to understand why.

Marimbire advised getting a manicure once a month if possible.

A professional will be able to remove the dead skin from cuticles without damaging them, and they will look neater.

“There are also over the counter creams that are available, that can moisturise the cuticle. The creams will have to be applied to the skin several times a day until your cuticles have healed,” she added.

But most importantly, when trying out the treatment, give them time to work for you. Don’t be too hasty and commit to working on the cuticles.
