‘Music is the best way to express your feelings’

Growing up in a family of poets and artists, Lavreau LavMore Lefember (17), says music, art and creativity runs in his veins.

POLOKWANE – “My dad is an amazing poet and artist; he played a major role in my music career. Other artists like Shane Eagle, Logic Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole and Eminem also had an impact on my career,” he said.

At the age of nine, LavMore explains his family was going through a rough patch and he realised turning to music could help him express himself.

“As a child I didn’t know how to express my feelings and hearing these astonishing big artists rapping about how they feel, made me realise I can be heard through poetry and music and not get judged by what I’m going through. I began writing a lot of poetry and it helped me get through each day step by step to deal with the obstacles I encountered. Music is the best way to express your feelings.”

Born and raised in Westenburg, Polokwane LavMore currently resides in Flora Park. He attended primary school at Laerskool Pietersburg-Noord, attended PEPPS for a year, and went to Mitchell House where he is currently a Gr 11 learner. After matric he hopes to further his studies at the Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) in Johannesburg to study sound engineering.

“Before I became an artist, I used to write poems with a neighbourhood friend of mine. Every Friday after school I used to freestyle while creating beats on tables with utensils. We called it Freestyle-Friday. We started this when I was eight years old and it helped to develop my passion for music.”

He explained growing up in a home with strong Christian beliefs helped to shape his music into what it is today. “I don’t use any vulgar language in my tracks. This makes my music suitable to people of all ages so I don’t exclude any of my fans. I want to give listeners something they can relate to with my songs.”

LavMore began performing last year and he has recorded and released over 21 tracks and he recently performed at the Polokwane Top Model pageant.

He added he manages to juggle his schoolwork and music rather easily. “I work on my music mostly during school holidays and weekends when I don’t have such a high workload from school. During exams I put my music on hold so I can fully concentrate on my studies.”

LavMore explained that becoming an artist isn’t just something one decides to do one day if they wake up.

“It has to be a passion. I’ve seen many people quit because they were not truly passionate about what they were doing. If you’re willing to work hard and you have patience, then music is for you. There is a lot of hard work that goes into producing a hit track. Writing lyrics does not come easy, it comes with patience, especially if it’s a deep song,” he explained.
