Getting to know Energy FM’s female DJ

This week we get to know Energy FM's mix DJ, Nomhle Patricia DJ Smagsoul Hlazana.

POLOKWANE –

• How long have you been a DJ? Charlie Mothupa, Turfloop.

“Well, I’ve been a DJ since I was 16 which makes it five years, but then for the first two years I was using a laptop which these days is not valued.”

• Smag, what made you want to be a DJ and what challenges do you encounter as a female DJ? Amanda Lebepe, Seshego Zone 2.

“I come from a family that loves music so much almost everyone wants a career in music. I am doing this for them and for myself and this is one thing that makes me feel great about myself and very happy for that matter.”

• Other than being a female DJ, what are your other interests at heart? Mmabatho Mphahlele, University of Limpopo.

“My other interest are just listening to music, spending time with my family and serving God.”

• What’s your favourite type of music you like to include in your sets whenever you play? Lerato Ledwaba, Bloodriver.

“Well, I never really play what I like. I play for the people, I don’t play for myself. What they love I give them.”

• Do you have plans of releasing an album like our very own Da Capo? Lina Makwela, Mentz.

“Funny that I’m also a vocalist so that is one great thing I have planned on working on, as a long term goal, and yeah I’m currently working on a new Afro house single featuring Villager SA. Sooner than later everyone will be dancing to my music.”

• How do you balance the life of being a DJ and being a normal human being? Doesn’t it get too busy for you at times? Thato Raphago, Zone 1 Mankweng.

“It gets so busy with back to back gigs, having to move from one place to another. I miss out on family meetings and occasions, not an easy thing. Sometimes I just have to make big sacrifices since family is the biggest part of my life too.”

• Are you single or taken and if you are taken how does your partner feel about the odd hours of your career? James Modiba, Solomondale.

“I’m not in a relationship. They can’t stand me, they feel intimidated by my independence. So yes I’m me.”
