Young Polokwane designer makes her mark

POLOKWANE – The 25-year-old from Moletjie-Ga Makibela is a qualified fashion designer as well as dress maker and explained her love and passion for fashion design stems from watching her mother and grandmother make clothes from scratch for her and her sister while growing up. “Growing up I used to be fascinated by how my mom and grandmother would sew and make clothes without patterns or sketches. They would simply imagine them and the clothes would turn out beautifully. From there I started imitating them and sewing clothes for my dolls. Even though I hurt myself with the needles several times, it was all worth it,” she explained.

Mahlatse soon became popular among her peers due to the extraordinary clothing she wore and she soon began designing and making her own clothes.

“I saw this as a business opportunity as I would make clothes for people in my community and charge them a certain amount of money. It felt good to make money for myself at such a young age and the independence rubbed off on me. This prompted me to register to study towards a qualification in fashion designing.”

The young fashion designer operates from a store in the Polokwane CBD which is where she creates her gorgeous garments for her clients. She dreams big as she plans to create a brand through her Haltsebelle clothing line which will tell her life story as a fashion designer.

“With this line, I want to touch nations and leave a mark in various countries which I plan to visit and incorporate their lifestyle with my designs in a quest to create unity and foster world peace. Clothes are essential and needed in the community so why not wear what you look good in?” she concluded.
