Local businessman, Walter Rachidi was elated to complete the Trek4Mandela expedition and climb Mt Kilimanjaro on Mandela Day.
Rachidi was part a group of mountain climbers and other inspired individuals from corporate and public backgrounds who left the country on 12 July to participate in the 7th edition of the Trek4Mandela expedition to Mt Kilimanjaro.
The group returned to South Africa on Friday evening after completing the expedition.
“It was for a good cause. I did this to raise funds to buy sanitary towels for underprivileged young women in the province,” Rachidi said.
He further explained that it was not an easy summit for him. “It was my first mountaineering expedition and it was physically and emotionally taxing. It took me 24 hours to reach the pinnacle. I am acrophobic, I have a fear of heights but am glad I overcame that and completed the expedition,” Rachidi said.
Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang reportedly said: “We are super proud and happy that the team is back safely. I think it again goes back to the message of service so that each one of them will continue to do something for someone else.”
