Various Polokwane residents, businesses and other organisations spent 67 minutes last Wednesday to honour Nelson Mandela by doing charitable works or making donations to the needy.
Many needy people’s lives were touched thanks to this initiative, a large number of whom were children. Mandela Day, which was Madiba’s birthday, saw people from all walks of life come together to bring change in the spirit of commemorating the life of the world icon and political leader.
Many of those participating in this initiative said they felt overwhelmed with love, friendship and gratitude.

Members of the African National Congress’s (ANC) branch in Ward 19 also volunteered their time by honouring Madiba’s legacy when they painted the palisade and gate of Good Hope Primary School in Westenburg on Saturday. Winrainbow Branch Chairman Mashimpye Stuurman referred to them having chosen the school because of its rich history with Mandela, since he was behind the community having such a school in its ward. Members, who showed up in numbers to see through the project were joined by Peter Mokaba Regional Executive Committee member Sabeer Kalla (second from right at the back) and ANC Polokwane Ward Councillor Haffiz Shaik.
