8 facts about gender equality you may not have known

Although the world is getting with the program about gender equality, many girls continue to live beneath their true potentials.

POLOKWANE – Here are examples of how gender inequality still affects young women all around the world with these 8 facts .

1. According to Makers Blog, citing 21 facts you never knew about international gender inequality, it stated that every year, an estimated 15 million girls who are under the age of 18 are married worldwide, with little or no say in the matter.

2. Makers blog also shared 4 out of 5 victims of human trafficking are girls.

3. Until recently, women in Saudi Arabia weren’t allowed to drive and are still discouraged from working jobs that would put them in contact with men.

4. According to Global Citizen, there are an estimated 781 million illiterate adults worldwide of which two thirds are women.

5. According to StatsSA, in the Mid-year population estimates of 2017, women comprised 51% of the total population. In spite of this fact, women still remain relatively unrepresented in positions of authority and power.

6. According to the World Economic Forum, South Africa is ranked the 17th out of 136 countries in terms of gender equality.

7. Iceland became the first country in the world to introduce legislation requiring companies prove they pay women and men equally. It’s now illegal for companies to pay men more than women for the same job.
