Zack da Freak, creating art through music

Zack da Freak is an artist from Lebowakgomo whose music will have you bopping along without realising.

POLOKWANE – The 22-year-old describes himself as an ambitious dreamer who creates art through music. His musical career started in 2011 when he founded a band called 48lyrics and they performed cover songs at local events.

“I also had music of my own, or rather a genre that I wanted to pursue, but then I started by recording house music for one of the local producers before I decided to take a different route. My music is now influenced by blues, pop and hip hop,” he said.

In 2016, he and his brother started a multimedia company named Swvy Unlock which gave light to his music career. They currently have five artists under their label.

Some of the highlights of his career include having his vocals purchased by a producer named DJ Forte and being in a studio session with Lynol, who is in a group called Muhungu Afrika.

“I take pride in my work and I’m inspired by the environment I grew up in and by the people who are willing to chase the same dream or ambition as mine.”

The biggest highlight, he added, has to be recording his first music video and being booked for performances all the way in Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

He shared he has had to work very hard to get his craft exposed to a broader audience as well as ensuring it gets recognition. He added he records from home but the equipment he has is not enough for the level of creativity he wants to embrace.

So far, he has learned to record and mix his own songs, copyright music as well as setting up sound systems through Damelin College, where he’s in his second year studying sound technology.

“I’m working on a mixtape for next year but in the meantime, I’ll be releasing a number of songs monthly for people to recognise the style of music I’m embracing. I will also help others with my recording skills and experience. Being an artist is not an easy task because you come across painful, exciting and thrilling moments. Focus, determination, belief and working with people who you see fit are what will drive you to success,” he concluded.
