Vic Mash brings ‘sbanzy rap’ to Limpopo
It took rapper and performer, Victor Vic Mash Mogale, about 10 years to come up with a new name for his style of music, categorised his style of rap as sbanzy rap, which basically means 'township lifestyle rap'.
POLOKWANE – Vic Mash’s rap songs mainly focus on true life stories that happen in his township. His Manager, Portia Mojapelo, told BONUS that Vic Mash wanted to reach out to the people which is why he joined the film casting industry, appearing in films and TV shows like Isibaya, The Queen, Skeemsaam and Isidingo. “He even appeared on the e-TV morning show, Sunrise, on 7 March and his music is on high rotation on radio stations,” Portia said.
Originally from Seshego Zone 3 and now residing in Luthuli Park, Vic Mash attended primary school at CM Sehlapelo Primary School and completed his high school years at Bokgaga Secondary School, matriculating in 2000.
He then studied computer literacy at the University of Venda and completed his diploma in 2003. His studies didn’t end there, however, and he went to Allenby Campus where he studied sound engineering. “My community inspired me to be in the music industry. I write and rap music based on life I see around my community,” Vic Mash said.
Portia added she discovered Vic Mash when she heard him rapping on a street corner. “I approached him and told him I could help him go far in the music industry and together we took his career to the next level as I’ve been working in the TV industry for quite a while,” she said.
The past two years, Portia said Vic Mash has been in studio preparing his new album, Trending, comprising 12 tracks which dropped on 30 April this year, released by EarlJays records.
“I realised the music industry on its own has taken a turn sound wise. With that drastic change of sound you have to adapt with all the various genres. Nowadays there is a new hip hop sound called new age hip hop. While some call it trap music, it’s very important to know your music and come up with something new and fresh,” Vic Mash added. He also has a caller-tune contract that Portia attached with MTN and Vodacom together with the album cover and photos. He also registered the Vic Mash Foundation, where he aims to give back to the community,” Portia said.
Vic Mash also partnered with the South African Police Services and he is currently the ambassador of the police’s #backtoschoolandpeoplelivingwithdisability campaign. “Vic Mash was the overall winner of the battle of the stage at the Marula and DStv iRrock festival, and he is now ready to enter the awards and share good music with the masses. His music can be found on Reverbnation, Soundcloud and YouTube among others,” Portia added.
