In celebration of World Environment Day, professionals from an environmental consulting company that was engaged by Polokwane Municipality, joined municipal workers employed through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) on Tuesday in a clean-up operation at Flora Park dam.
This year’s theme for World Environment Day is ‘Beat plastic pollution’ and it is the United Nation’s most important day for encouraging a world-wide awareness and action towards protection of the environment.
Convenor of the operation and a director of the consulting company, Desmond Musetsho, said that the project’s aim is to create awareness for a clean city and a healthy environment. He joined the workers as they collected liquor bottles, styrofoam containers, disposable nappies, condoms and even electric bulbs that were dumped in the dam. “The items that are disposed of in and around the dam have severe environmental consequences for plant and animal life and can also pollute sources of water for residents,” he said and added that it is evident that visitors to the picnic area do not make use of the bins provided by the municipality.
