The Rotary Club of Pietersburg 100’s annual potjiekos competition hosted in the garden of Martiens and Anette de Wet outside the city on Sunday, was one of the highlights on the club’s social calendar, with the Mexicanos emerging as the winning team with their venison and lamb potjies.
The potjie of the winning team with Johan and Yvonne Joubert and Charles van der Walt as team leaders, included deep fried avocados and garlic potatoes on the side and an ample supply of tequila to contribute to the Mexican theme.
All dishes were prepared on site and on open fires and Rotarian Celia Lister drew much attention as she made her own pasta right next to the fire, later to be served with meatballs meticulously fried by her team mate, Bellah Bambo.
Judges Kelly Bauristhene and Petros Neophytou of Limpopo Chefs Academy and Harrie Heselinga agreed that it was not an easy task to select a winner from the potjies and took note of the team’s decorations and attire as well as the team spirit.
Some of the side dishes to the potjies which mainly had venison as basis, were peppadew breads, balsamic and nuts coleslaw, fried prawns and wild rice.
President of the club, Peter Mockford, congratulated the winners and commended the organising team with Rotarian Naas Vorster at the helm, for their hard work. “It was an excellent opportunity for Rotarians to socialise and experience real fellowship in a pristine environment,” Mockford said.
