The lowdown on false eyelashes

We spoke to beauty therapist and expert eyelash technician, Maria Mabusela from Fablane Nail and Beauty Spa, about what we need to know about false eyelashes.

POLOKWANE – Women love to look good from head to toe and since the eyes are the windows to the soul, many of us who don’t have naturally long lashes opt for false eyelashes to accentuate their eyes.

When getting false eyelashes, does your eyelash technician go into depth explaining to you why certain lashes work for some people’s eyes and not for others? Do you check to ensure the eyelash technician is following strict hygiene practices?

We spoke to beauty therapist and expert eyelash technician, Maria Mabusela from Fablane Nail and Beauty Spa, about what we need to know about false eyelashes.

As our eyes are important parts of our bodies, Maria said, hence the type of eyelashes and glue used should be chosen with care. We must also know, she added, that natural eyelashes have a life cycle in which they grow and fall off. This is the reason why after three weeks, you have to go back to the beautician and touch up the false eyelashes.

“False eyelashes need to be washed and cleaned thoroughly. Some of us have crust on our eyes (rheum dries and gathers as a crust in the corners of the eyes) when we wake up in the morning. There is also dust that goes to our faces so there is always debris on our lashes which makes it important to wash and cleanse your eyelash extensions in order to have long lasting, healthy looking extensions.”

Maria has encountered a variety of problems from shoddy work done with false eyelashes.

“Red eyes and chemical burns from poor ventilation when adhesive (eyelash glue) is applied as well as eyelashes stuck together with too much adhesive are common problems I see daily. This stunts the growth of the natural lashes, causing pain and inflammation,” she explained.

False eyelashes, she explained, come in different qualities and textures. “Look for the best quality that does not lose moisture or texture. Eyelashes come in various sizes, weight and shapes which helps the technician identify the correct lashes suitable for their client because natural lashes differ. Some people have weak lashes whereas some have strong lashes. Firstly, as a technician you must be able to identify the strength of natural lashes and this will direct you to choosing which false eyelashes to use. Those who love drama need to have strong lashes first, and this is not negotiable. Anything that is 12 mm and beyond is not good for weak lashes. Lashes have roots and once you damage them you won’t have your own lashes. Remember, eyelashes are there for a purpose.”
