NGO to uplift the community

A lover of music and youth development, Mashile Phoshoko also known as DJ Letlaka explained how he and a few of his friends started the Mphosho Youth Development NGO to help engage the youth in activities that would benefit them.

POLOKWANE – “The organisation started in the year 2010 with an aim to uplift the youth and the community. It was named after the queen of the village of Segopye, Kgoshigadi. Every year since the organisation was developed we host and facilitate different events from music festivals, sports tournaments, donations and the likes with an aim to try and get the youth in our community involved and engaged in these activities. It will not only keep them busy but will also teach them a few skills as well as provide them with knowledge that they may need to face life challenges,” he explained.

The organisation has also donated sanitary towels in a bid to rule out the number of absentees due to the lack of these. “No child should have to miss school because of not having basic essentials such as sanitary towels, food or school uniform, this is where Mphosho as an organisation tries by all means to help close those gaps by collecting these items and then giving them to those individuals in the community who really need them,” he added.

The Mphosho Youth Development NGO will be hosting an annual music festival, the Annual Segopye Music Festival in which they not only entertain festivalgoers, but hand out sanitary towels and food parcels.

The first event was held at the Batladi Sports Ground on Tuesday, 26 December.

As the Chairman of the organisation, Phoshoko explained he has great hopes that individuals from within the Limpopo province will lend a helping hand. “The music festival is also aimed at providing the youth in Ga-Mmamabolo with opportunities to showcase their talents. The organisation also aims at promoting a positive lifestyle, the idea that God will provide does not work as God only helps those who stand up to help themselves. The youth in my community need to learn, they need to wake up and get up and do things for themselves, to fend for themselves and make their lives better. This part of the organisation is called ‘Tsoga re phande’ which means wake up and work to make your life better,” he concluded.
