Polokwane second in Lim Greenest City Contest

After scooping the district, provincial and national awards in the Greenest Municipality Competition last year, Polokwane Municipality ended in the second place in the provincial round of this year’s competition that was hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet).
At the announcement ceremony at Bolivia Lodge last Friday, Greater Tzaneen Municipality emerged as the provincial winner this year and will proceed to the national competition.
“Polokwane Municipality received a cheque for R130 000 and a certificate and is still counted amongst the best in the Greenest Municipality Competition. On 19 October 2017, the municipality also scooped position 1 in the Capricorn District completion and was awarded a trophy, certificate and prize money of R30 000,” Disree Manyane, acting Media and Stakeholder Relations Assistant Manager of the municipality, says in a media release. “Five districts competed in the Provincial Greenest Municipality Competition and were assessed with regard to their water and conservation status and energy, waste, landscaping, tree planting and good governance management,” Manyane explains.
“Wetlands Day is celebrated globally on
2 February and is focused on nature conservation and preservation,” Mayoral Committee member for Water and Sanitation, William Kganyago said at the ceremony and appealed to all to play their role in preserving water and maintaining indigenous resources at all times. “The preservation and conservation of this resources will prevent us from getting ill and sickness. Wetlands must be integrated in all municipalities as part of greening initiatives,” Kganyago reported said.
“Kganyago applauded the good work done by the women and men who were regarded for their hard efforts. He encouraged municipalities which did not win, to go back and rectify their mistakes in order to be the best in 2019,” Manyane concluded.
