Anna dreams of stitching her way to Milan

Acknowledging her long life passion for designing, Anna Magwete decided it was no longer the time to solely see her designs in her minds eye, but on the catwalks in Milan, New York and Paris and started designing.

POLOKWANE – “I completed Gr 12 in 2003 and did not have the opportunity to study so I started working. All through school and after school I used to design clothes. Then last year, around July, I started to do this as a business,” she added.

To substantiate her passion for designing, Anna can clearly recall a time when she would cut the curtains in her mother’s house just so she could have material to create a dress.

“I can make dresses and formal trousers. I am still battling with the men suits. I not only design, but also make all of my clothing. I designed and made my own matric farewell dress,” she added.

She further explained her versatility skills, adding that she is able to recreate a dress solely on a photo that a client shows her. Keeping up with the latest fashion trends, her current preferable material is the Nigerian wax fabric as this is not only trending in the fashion world but is also easy to work with.

Having a fashion icon such as David Tlale who has among others showcased his work at the Cape Town Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, it will be of no surprise if her designs make their way to these platforms. “My advice to other young people who want to go into designing is to pursue their dream. If it is what you like, then go for it. Be patient as it is hard work,” she concluded.
