Training centre ruffles Maribashoek feathers

The Maribashoek community is up in arms over a learning centre that is currently being built in the area.

LIMPOPO – According to the community representative Gido de Mendonca, the necessary legal procedures were not followed by the applicant, Ergo Water Works and the representative Jan Bapela from Plot 40.

“What is even greater concern is that Bapela already illegally deforested 1,5 hectares. The community was not included in the development of a training centre in the area or given a notice of such development.”

According to De Medonca, Maribashoek is known for its lack of water.

It can be clearly seen that building on the premises go ahead without any plans.

“Bapela did not conduct a impact study and the construction of a training facility that will accommodate hundreds of students would have a major impact on the underground water and the environment.”

Mosiye Seakamela, geohydrological and environmental consultant for MMS Monti Water told Bosveld he is aware of the development.

“I am aware that Bapela did not follow legal procedures and illegally deforested 1,5 hectares on the plot. MM Monti Water the consultant in this matter did inform Bapela by a notice of the illegality of the deforestation and that he did not follow procedures. The matter was also reported to Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism which afterwards issued a fine.”

Solani Ntshani, Acting Manager of Planning and Development Services at Mogalakwena Municipality said the department received an application for special consent for the purposes of building a training centre from Bapela.

“We will respond to the applicant’s request. The applicant has to put a notice at the gate of the property for all community members to see. Bapela has to put a notice into the Government Gazette and advertise in the newspaper for input from stakeholders, so the community can object. We are dealing with the issue and the community can be assured that the correct procedures will be followed. ”

According to Ntshani, construction of the building was referred to the building department in the municipality: “An order to stop construction was not issued as Bapela insisted that in such an event, all Maribashoek residents should provide proof of their building plans.”

Bapela declined to comment on the issue.
