• I had no interest at all in the DJ industry until I heard your work, so now I’m keen in learning how to mix do u perhaps give lessons? Rati Makgoba.

Any decent chef will tell you, you can’t make great food from poor ingredients and you can’t make a good DJ mix from the same old tunes everyone else has. Going the extra mile to get great material and then compiling it with creativity is key. You need to do research about your music.

• How did you get the name ya Fakaza? Elliot from Mankweng.

Some years ago while working at a radio station in Pretoria, there were so many DJ’s called Jacky, somehow it caused confusions to listeners, until one day a colleague called me Fakaza while we were on air. Listeners fell in love with the name and up to this day I’m still known by it.

• I’d like to know what keeps you going in such a new and evolving industry. What keeps you in the zone? Nomsa Shipalana from Bendor.

There have been huge mind-blowing advances in technology over the last few decades, Music has changed drastically, same goes with DJ’s. With the help of technology, you can now collaborate with someone across the globe who has a completely different culture and background and do music together.

• You are always playing a nice set. Do you only listen to house or other genres? Lesiba from Turfloop.

I’m a huge fan of soul and RnB. I get bookings for playing soul and RnB music at various events, unlike past decade when there were only house music gigs. Now the market has opened for other genres.

• What type of music do you listen to Mr Selector Fakaza when you are waiting to meet your new date? Justice Ngoepe from Moletjie Motinti.

I have been collecting music since the 90’s. It will depend on my mood at that time. I can play my date UB40 or Thandiswa Mazwai.

• How do you prepare your day coming to work with this good music you select for us? Justice Ngoepe from Moletjie Motinti.

Firstly I make sure I listen to any one of my favourite songs before I jump out of bed just to boost up my mood. That way I am guaranteed a productive and memorable day at work.

• Do you think the new leadership come December will change the lives of most disadvantaged South Africans who are unemployed? Lastly are you a born-again Christian? Justice Ngoepe from Moletjie Motinti.

I’m not into politics or belong to any political party but I believe as South Africans we can achieve more together irrespective of party affiliation. I believe in God.
