Climbing his way to the top, one step at a time

Radio personality Sandile Wils-Dee Dikgari Bochum Ga-Mareis, who now resides in Turfloop due to work, is currently working as the programmes Manager at Radio Turf (University of Limpopo).

POLOKWANE – He is part of the Radio Turf management and his key responsibilities are to manage and supervise line managers and all presenters.

“I manage all radio shows and some content as well. As the Programmes Manager I report to the Deputy Station Manager, Makwena Mamadi. I joined Radio Turf in March 2014 as the Chief Producer and I was later promoted to Programmes Manager.”

He studied media and journalism at Jeppe College in Johannesburg, journalism at MAPPP SETA, communication sciences at Unisa, digital media production at College SA, and marketing and digital marketing at the University of the Free State.
“Radio is sometimes challenging for me due to pressure but I like it that way, however. The love and talent I have for radio made it easier for me due to the fact that it wasn’t about the money for me, it was about an opportunity to get a slot on radio and do what I love. My love for radio developed in 2005 through my older brother, Joel, who used to imitate radio personalities. He was a Master of Ceremonies (MC) at a local complex for promotions but unfortunately he never succeeded at school nor getting an opportunity on radio so he focused on other things. I then took over and told him that I’m going to study what he loves most and promised him that one day he will be proud of me because through him I had developed a passion for radio and realised possible talent in me. I’m very grateful for that,” Sandile said.
During his spare time, Sandile MCs for events per request and he’s also an event coordinator. He is also the founder of an annual show called Radio DJ’s Show, and apart from that, he is also an outgoing person who has a passion for the entertainment industry.

He has a company named Wil’s Dee Projects and Entertainment which organises events, stretch tents and VIP setups for hire and many other things to do with entertainment.

Annually Radio Turf hosts presenter awards annually to thank them for the hard work and dedication they put into their work. They also host youth and women empowerment events.
“Most people want to be on radio but unfortunately it’s not everyone who can make it based on the competition we have already. I won’t say people are afraid to venture into this industry because if you are passionate about something, you will make an effort to get it. This industry is for people with creativity and talent and not everyone has these talents even though they excel in other ventures. Radio moves with the times, it is no longer about having a good voice, it is about the quality of the content you can give your listeners,” he added.

“As a young man who comes from a disadvantaged background, I had to grow up with the help of many people in my life and I’m thankful for everyone who contributed into making me who I am today, Especially my mother. As a single mother reliant on grants, she used this grant money to give me the opportunity to further my education and I am eternally grateful for that. I am not where I want to be yet but what I am and have today, is still much better than what I had and where I came from,” he concluded.
