Polokwane Air Show set to sky to new heights

There are only four weeks remaining before the Polokwane Air Show is set to take place for the first time since 2007.

POLOKWANE – The final plans are getting set by personnel of Gateway Airports Authority Limited’s (GAAL) at Polokwane International Airport.

BONUS spoke to GAAL’s Acting Business Development Manager, Khyanisa Makamu, who is part of the organising team of the airshow.

Makamu said the Polokwane Air Show is set to take place on Saturday, 7 October at the Polokwane International Airport and will start at 08:00 until 15:00. She added although entrance to the show is free, R20 will be charged per vehicle for parking access.

“We are really excited to host the Polokwane Air Show. Part of the aim of this show is simply to put Polokwane International Airport on the map and an air show is an excellent initiative to market the airport,” Makamu explained.

She said about 25 pilots are expected to perform with various aircrafts during the show with one of the highlights being a performance by the South African Police Service Airwing from Gauteng.

“The Polokwane Air Show will also see children from rural areas across the five districts of Limpopo being transported to the air show. Various business entities from Polokwane as well as various car dealerships are set to exhibit their products during the show. No alcohol will be allowed or sold at the air show but there will be an array of food and drink stalls available.” She added no animals will be allowed at the air show as the noise from the airplanes might upset them.

Makamu added they are still awaiting confirmation from the Office of the Deputy Minister of Transport, Lydia Chikunga, whether she will be able to attend the event.

Among the activities for school children at the show is a motivational talk by several female pilots from a flight school to give them insight into a career as a pilot. Various aircraft will also be showcased which visitors can view from close by.

Makamu said about 100 parking marshals will assist and help look after the vehicles of air show visitors.

“We plan to organise the Polokwane Air Show every second year,” says Makamu.
