DIY decorating tips: How to choose the right paint colour

Review spoke to local paint mixing expert, Jermina Patel, to find out how important the right colour is when painting your walls.

POLOKWANE – Choosing the right colour combinations to paint the rooms in your home could be intimidating for beginners. This is understandable, as colours can make a room look bigger or smaller than it is and often clash with people’s furniture.

Review spoke to local paint mixing expert, Jermina Patel, to find out how important the right colour is when painting your walls.

Jermina who also offers clients advise on interior decorating says many people tend to forget that colours have a unique psychological value. “Before you start you should think of the colours you want to use and how they make you feel; how they can influence feelings from bringing out tranquillity to rage,” she explains.

It’s important to know which colours work together and how your furniture will compliment your choices.

She adds that using a small amount of colour can evoke a different feel than when it is used excessively. According to Jermina, colours are classified as either active, passive or neutral. “Light colours are expansive and airy, making a room seem larger and brighter. Dark colours are sophisticated and more intimate”.

Jermina shared a few tips for choosing paint:

• Red – raises a room’s energy level. It is a great choice for when you want to stir up excitement.

• Yellow – captures the joy of sunshine and communicates happiness. It is the perfect choice for your kitchen, dining room or bathroom.

• Blue – brings down blood pressure and slows respiration and heart rate. Blue is considered calming, relaxing and serene and is often recommended for bedrooms and bathrooms.

• Green – is considered the most restful colour for the eyes.

Combining the refreshing quality of blue and the excitement of yellow and green is suitable for almost any room.

• Purple – is rich, dramatic and sophisticated. It is associated with luxury as well as creativity and as an accent or secondary colour it gives a scheme depth.

• Orange – invokes excitement, enthusiasm and is an energetic colour.

While not a good idea for living room or a bedroom this colour is great for an exercise room.

• Neutral colours – are basic to a decorators toolkit. They are flexible and can be used anywhere.

Consider these tip before painting a room and make the most of the space you have.
