The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Command Team has in the harshest terms condemned the senseless killing of a community member who reportedly died after allegedly being shot with live ammunition during what it described as a peaceful protest near the entrance to a mine at Mampa in the Sekhukhune yesterday (Wednesday).
In the EFF media statement the deceased was identified as Molepa Manthata, who reportedly was in his 20s and among community members preparing to march against Sefateng Chrome Mine seen to fail to comply with social labour plans. The EFF in Limpopo stressed that the manslaughter of black people by the coward African National Congress (ANC) government should never be tolerated. “The role of the Police is to prevent crime and protect people; not to kill them. We will continue to expose and fight the barbaric unleashing of violence by the murderous ANC regime on innocent citizens that continues to happen on a daily basis. The apartheid style execution of our masses clearly indicates that this government emulates and envies what apartheid did to our people.”
It called on the MEC for Community Safety to arrest “the criminal Police and make sure that such acts do not repeat themselves”.
The acting Provincial Chairperson of the EFF, Rendani Munyai told Polokwane Observer that the saddest thing about the incident was that community members were not engaged in a violent protest but gathered with the demand to speak with mine management. According to her Manthata was shot in the back once and died on the scene.
Provincial Police Corporate Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo referred media enquiries to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) in Limpopo, which in turn directed Polokwane Observer to national Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini. He, however, could not be reached on his cell or office line.
