Assistant Director at the Department of Education, Mbhazima David Mabasa will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court again on 13 June facing a charge of corruption after he was granted bail of R1 000 yesterday (Wednesday) following his arrest the previous day (Tuesday).
Limpopo Hawks Spokesperson Matimba Maluleke said Mabasa, who is responsible for administering the University of Venda’s bursaries, allegedly demanded R4 400 from a parent in order to approve the bursary. The matter was reported to the Hawks and an operation was conducted resulting in Mabasa’s arrest in Polokwane immediately after taking possession of the bribe, according to Maluleke.
Maluleke encouraged other parents who had also fallen victim to Mabasa’s scam to report to the nearest Police station or to contact the investigating officer Lt Col Seabi on 071 351 7272.
