BONUS had the opportunity to test drive the E220d courtesy of Mercurius Motors Polokwane. We were accompanied by Department of Education Director of Communications, Dr Naledzani Rasila, and Mercurius Motors Sales Executive, Timothy Maluleka.

The E220d comes complete with infotainment and control systems offering an all-new experience. The latest innovations, including the Active Lane-change Assist which allows the driver to effortlessly steer into the selected lane, makes the E-Class the most intelligent saloon in the executive class.

Dr Naledzani Rasila (Department of Education, Director of Communications) is thoroughly impressed with the new Mercedes-Benz E220d with its AMG sport package.

“The exterior of the new E-class looks very sporty and is definitely appealing on the eyes – it beckons to be driven. The cabin with its black interior together with suede and leather seats just add to the comfort and impressive looks. The controls are within easy reach on the steering wheel and makes for a relaxing drive without distracting you from the road,” Rasila said.

The E220d is powered by an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine with a four mill drive train which delivers 194kW and 400Nm with an estimated fuel consumption of 3,9 litres per 100 km.

Behind the steer, Rasila made it clear that he is not a person for speed and performance. He says he prefers to cruise and the E220d fits the bar perfectly for just that.

All engines for the new E-Class are equipped with the ECO start and stop function to meet the emissions standards requirements. The E220d automatic is equipped as standard with the new 9G TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. It enables fast gear changes and allows low engine revs, which has a particularly beneficial effect on efficiency and noise levels.

The suspension on the new E-Class offers agile driving pleasure on twisting roads as well as the highest level of ride comfort while the new assistance and safety systems take safety, comfort and driver assistance to new levels.

Active Brake Assist is fitted as standard and it can warn the driver of impending collisions, provide support with emergency braking and, if necessary, also autonomously apply the brakes.

Another technological advantage Maluleka explained is the fact that the E-Class range can be connected to your cell phone. He explained that if for instance you are in your office and you are unsure whether you have locked the car, you can lock the car from your mobile device.

“For me the E220d is a highly impressive vehicle. While driving I immediately felt at ease and comfortable behind the steer and the many controls are user friendly without being cluttered. The reverse camera function with its wide-angle view is also very impressive, so is its infotainment abilities,” Rasila added.

As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the new E-Class comes standard with a Premium Drive six-year or 100 000 km maintenance plan.
