While South Africans celebrate Family Day today, we have a look at some famous families from around the world.

POLOKWANE – Family Day in South Africa is celebrated the day after Easter Sunday each year.

In 1995, government decided to rename what was known as Easter Monday to ‘Family Day to give South Africans an extra day off to spend with their families.

Most people would agree that family is one of the most important things in ones life and spending time with one’s family is essential.

Keeping in the family spirit, we’ve compiled the following list of famous families from around the world:

  1. The Obamas
Michelle, Malia, Barack and Sasha Obama are one of the most famous families in the world.

The Obamas first came into the spotlight after being the first African-American family to live in the White House after Barack Obama was elected President of the United States in 2009.

Barack and Michelle have two daughters, Malia (19) and Sasha (16). In 2014 Malia and Sasha were named two of “The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014” by Time magazine.

2. The Mandela’s

Do we really need to explain why the Mandela’s are famous?

With three wives, six children, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, Nelson Mandela’s family continue to uphold his legacy.

3. The Beckham’s

Brooklyn, Cruz, Victoria, Romeo, Harper and David Beckham are known for being a stylish family.

He’s known for his soccer skills, she’s known for being Posh Spice and together, David and Victoria Beckham have four children.

They have three sons: Brooklyn (18); Romeo (15) and Cruz (12) as well as one daughter, Harper (6).

The Beckham’s home in England was nicknamed Beckingham Palace,  a play on Buckinham Palace (The Queen of England’s residence).

4. The Fergusons

She is famous for her role as Karabo Moroka on Generations and he is known for his good looks.

Together, Connie and Shona Ferguson are known as one of South Africa’s biggest power couples.

They have two daughters: Lesedi (from Connie’s previous marriage) and Alicia whom they had together.

5. The Kardashians

The Kardashians are complicated, but you know who they are.

Love them or hate them, you know of them, you know about them and admit it, you’ve probably watched an episode of their hit reality show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Headed by matriarch Kris Jenner, the Kardashians are a large family comprising of seven siblings: Kylie and Kendall Jenner as well as Khloe, Kourtnery, Rob and Kim Kardashian.

Kris has six grandchildren: North, Saint, Mason, Penelope, Reign and Dream.

6. The Simpsons

Bart, Marge, Maggie, Homer and Lisa Simpson are TV’s most famous family.

This long-running animated comedy focuses on the eponymous family in the town of Springfield in an unnamed U.S. state and has 28 seasons under its name.

The famaily is headed by Homer and Marge Simpson who have three children together: Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie.

Time named The Simpsons the 20th century’s best television series and on January 14, 2000, the Simpson family was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
