Keeping you company till the break of dawn

Energy FM's nightwatchman is responsible for keeping listeners awake and entertained

POLOKWANE – Energy FM’s eccentric Dawn Express presenter, Karabo Mathosa, has the energy and enthusiasm to headline the morning slot.

This 21-year-old from Toronto, Mankweng is on the radio every Monday to Friday, from 03:00 to 06:00.

Karabo admits that when he was younger, he was a bit confused about what he wanted to become, but always knew he wanted to be on the radio.

“I always enjoyed radio and asked my brother for a radio for my 16th birthday.

“I would do my school work listening to the radio and this subconsciously built a desire for radio, but it wasn’t that definitive. It wasn’t until I went to university and I came across the campus radio station Rhodes Music Radio, that I fully realised my passion,” Karabo said.

He studied towards a BA in journalism and psychology at Rhodes University. Being in a new environment is a challenge for anyone and it can be a little nerve-wracking when you are working for one of the best radio stations in the city.

Karabo explains how he went about getting over his bout of jitters.

“It helped that I wasn’t the only newcomer, however, there was that bit of anxiety given the number of different personalities, and people of different ages. It was always a question of if I would fit in but eventually I did,” he said. He attributes his success in radio to the fact that he has a personality that stands out.

According to him, his number one mission is to entertain.

“I’d like to think I’m just a natural entertainer, and I think that’s what people need in the world. The world has become very serious. If you turn on the radio and hear a joke, some news, and a little satire, that could brighten your day, and I think my personality can provide all that,” Karabo continued. One of his goals is to get more people to listen to radio as he believes that radio is one of the best forms of entertainment. Since he is experienced in the media field, he gives up-and-coming youths interested in the industry, a few wise words.

“You shouldn’t be afraid to take the leap. You shouldn’t be discouraged by who you are, but be excited by who you can become,” he concluded.
