POLOKWANE – Using puff pastry is never easy, especially if you make it yourself, but luckily, many stores stock puff pastry that is ready made and ready to use. Puff pastry is one of the most versatile types of pastry as they can be used for both savoury and sweet dishes. You can use a normal cheese such as cheddar, gouda or tussers but parmesan gives them that extra kick and flavour burst.

You will need:

– 400 g puff pastry, thawed.

– 1 egg, lightly whisked.

– 1/2 tsp. fine salt.

– 2 tsp. paprika.

– 1/3 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese or any cheese you prefer.

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 220°C.

2. Line a baking tray with non-stick baking paper.

3. Unroll puff pastry. Brush with egg, then sprinkle with salt, paprika and cheese.

4. Use a rolling pin to carefully flatten the toppings.

5. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to neatly cut the pastry sheet into long straws (in the width).

6. Twist each straw and place it on the lined baking tray. The amount might mean you have to do more than one batch.

4. Bake each batch for about 10 min. or until golden brown but not too dark, then remove from the oven and leave to cool.
