Art exhibition to promote local talent on Heritage Day

Seshego artisit set to host exhibition to boost interest in local artists

SESHEGO – Visual artist, Emmanuel Setlhabane, plans to host an art exhibition to promote local talent this coming Saturday (24 September).

He says because of the lack of support and opportunities in the industry for artists to showcase their work, he has taken the responsibility to close the gap. “The exhibition is open to artists and art enthusiasts alike and offers them a platform to network and meet potential buyers,” he explains. The exhibition will take place in Ext 73 and will include art displays as well as traditional food stalls and tasting stations.

He tells BONUS he was eight years old when he started expressing himself through art. “My grandparents realised I have a talent and encouraged me to develop it,” he explains. He says his art represents a diverse community through tradition and culture.

“Things are constantly evolving and I want to preserve our history so young people can learn about it through my art,” he continues. He says the youth is heavily influenced by technology but cautions them not to forget their culture and heritage.

The family man and father of three says his goal is to open a gallery. He does not have any formal training but says: “God gave me this talent so I can tell stories which influence people’s lives and I am proud of it.”

He explains being an artist comes with its own share of challenges such as not being able to make sales. “I am calling on the community to contribute in making the exhibition a reality. Support in any form will be appreciated,” he says. Emmanuel says he hopes to attract people from all over the province to support the initiative. He says as much as people from Polokwane travel to other provinces to take part in exhibitions, he wants them to do the same in Limpopo. Artists who want to present their work at the exhibition can contact him at 081 892 4697.
