Add some African print for more traditional flair

Designer Edwina Maphale Gole speaks to BONUS about the timelessness in traditional clothing.

LIMPOPO – Add a touch of traditional flair to your closet for a fashion that will always be in style.
She says traditional clothes are timeless and everyone needs a few items in their closet. She explains that although traditional clothes are worn for various reasons, a common one they share is the classic feel it adds.
“As fashionable as we may look in traditional clothes, it is also a part of our customs. It represents our culture and identity.”
Gole says the clothes we wear affect our appearance because of how we conduct ourselves when we are dressed a specific way. She says traditional costumes can be worn to any occasion, including formal ones, depending on how you dress it up.
She says traditional clothes don’t have to be all dull and boring – you can add a modern twist to make it more playful and something to wear on a daily basis.
“Some of the trending items which look good in African print (common materials for clothing in Africa) include crop tops, peplums and blazers.
“These can be worn with a normal pencil skirt or jeans for both casual and formal events or a typical office look.”
She says other traditional modern looks are jumpsuits and short dresses. She says dresses and a headscarf in animal print is always a hit, regardless the occasion.
Gole says traditional elements can also be incorporated into a more formal ensemble like a long flowing gown for a wedding or other formal events.
She explains that traditional clothes has something for the entire family.
Gole ventured into designing in 2004 when she enrolled for a design course and has since never looked back.
She says her love for making clothes increases everyday as she appreciates the look of happiness on her clients’ faces when something she made for them really makes them shine.
She enjoys seeing something amazing she designed come to life. She says her goal is to own an academy where she will empower her community by passing on her skills.
The mother of four says although she has been in the business for a long time, she has never stopped learning. “I need to keep up with the trends so I can stay relevant to the people I cater for,” she explains.
She says, among other things, she makes wedding gown, suits, formal and casual attire.

She is the owner of Ma-Gole Décor and Sewing located in Market Street, Polokwane.
