Mandela sculpture steals spotlight at ANC rally

Several artists showed off their artwork during the ANC Siyanqoba Rally at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex yesterday (Sunday).

POLOKWANE – One of these artists was Ronald Nkoana (30) from Moletjie, Ga-Setati, who made a sculpture of Nelson Mandela. The sculpture was clearly a crowd favourite, as people could be seen posing for photos with it.

Nkoana said he worked on the sculpture for two and a half years.

“Being unemployed forced me to venture into art to earn a living. I was born with a creative flair and didn’t have to further my studies in art to excel in the industry,” he said.

He said he has always wanted to meet Mandela and shake his hand, but that is no longer a possibility.

“I used images from the internet to get a 360 degree angle of Madiba’s frame. This is my very first sculpture and I am happy with how it turned out,” says Nkoana.

He also designed a chair for the sculpture, which lights up in the dark.

“I used water pipes, wire and glue to put together the sculpture, and skin cosmetics to give the sculpture a more human look.”
